If you go to mid Sweden, bordering to Norway you find the region Dalarna. Dalarna is the essence of Sweden with the red wooden houses, clear lakes and dark green forests. And then of course there is the colourful Dala horse, which is a regular part of every Swedish souvenir shop.
If you wish to experience beautiful nature and wild animals, then Dalarna is a good choice. Among others you find the largest predator park in Europe here. The park boasts 325,000 m2 with brown bears, polar bears and other impressive predators. If you wish to experience the bears in the wild you can go on bear excursions out in the wilderness. Does the idea of meeting a bear sound a bit to dangerous then you can also go on the less thrilling beaver safaris. The safari typically takes place in a canoe, on a raft or on a boat. This way you also get to see the beautiful nature in Dalarna while looking for the sweet beavers.
During winter, Dalarna is a popular area for skiing. Sälen and Idre are among the most popular skiing areas, which are especially visited by families with smaller kids, due to its many child friendly slopes. Dalarna also has some beautiful cross country skiing areas and if you are looking for a challenge then you can participate in the annual Vasa race, which is a 90 kilometres long cross country race. During summer the route is used for a mountain bike race.
Falun is the capital of Dalarna and it is also the capital of the red wooden cottages whose colour is also called ‘Falu red’. In Falun you can visit Falun cobber mine, which is on the UNESCO world heritage list. The cobber mine is a beautiful experience for the entire family. The kids can have fun in the ‘kids mine’ and afterwards you can eat at one of the good restaurants or cafes.
